Engaging in social media can be a thrilling, addictive and humbling experience. As part of personal exploration into the sexual underbelly of social connections, Heather M of the Femme Project engaged in virtual sex-play relationships with various partners. The results of her interactions developed into a portfolio of projects entitled “Sexting,” exploring dynamics of femininity, sexual empowerment, body image and misogyny.
The Charcoal IMG Series presents her body as a canvas for comment and feedback. The drawings, based on photos taken with her mobile phone, are aesthetic reflections on her body as an object of desire. The juxtaposition of a disposable art form, the camera phone “selfie,” with the hand-drawn form on canvas as high art.
